NAEYC Standard 2. Building family and community relationships
2a. Knowing about and understanding family and community characteristics
2b. Supporting and empowering families and communities through respectful, reciprocal relationships
2c. Involving families and communities in their children’s development and learning
As a teacher, I understand that families and the community have a huge impact on children’s development and learning. Having knowledge about the diversity of the families of my students helps me understand my student’s lives and well help me to help them learn and develop. Families have a huge influence on a child’s development, and because of this it is very important for early childhood educators to get families and communities involved and engaged in their learning to increase their success. We have to be understanding and sensitive about each family and their diverse backgrounds to be able to plan and to know how to involve them with respect to benefit their children’s learning and development. Families and communities can benefit children in many ways when talking about their leaning and development.

From course Early Childhood Program, School, and Social Change (CHD 216), I created a website for my classroom to promote a multicultural classroom. I believe that it is very important for children to learn to respect every family’s culture. The website is used as a tool to communicate with parents and to provide them with many different resources and community services to support families and children. Since we live in the U.S, which is a diverse country, children will benefit from learning about each other’s cultures and about each other who come from all different backgrounds.
The website provides many different resources for parents and families to include articles on child development and learning, different activities that parents can do with their children at home to promote their learning, resources for diversity, multicultural learning resources and community services. The most important part of the website is how it opens communication with the parents and keeps them informed.
The website provided information on how parent teacher partnerships can benefit children in many ways. The resources I provide will help parents to get informed about many topics when they have a child attending my classroom.
I have learned to create a useful communication tool to communicate with the diverse families of my students. I learned how to get families and communities of all backgrounds involved in their children’s learning in professional ways. I understand that as an early childhood educator it is extremely beneficial to children to treat all families with respect and also to help them connect to community services and businesses that partner with schools to enhance education and opportunities for children and families. When families get involved with their child’s development their children will pick up on this and it will benefit their learning development and their attitude towards school. For me, I found that learning how to build family and community relationships is an important part of my professional development as well as children development. As an early childhood educator, it is very important to know, understand and respect the diversity of families and communities and their characteristics. Getting families and the community involved in a child’s learning can greatly benefit their learning.
