CHD 145 Teaching Art, Music, and Movement to Children
In this course I had to make a portfolio that showcased all of the various techniques used to teach children to develop their creativity in art, music and movement. I visited a preschool to complete this project which was very educational. I got to see first-hand how an art center for a school is designed. I also got to see how teacher’s engaging children in learning art and doing art, and how they use various materials and activities to promote their student’s creative thinking. It was a great learning experience for me to get to see the variety of techniques used in a real life classroom session. Through creating the portfolio artifact I learned about techniques and strategies I can use in my own career to help me create and provide appropriate learning activities to promote student’s creativity in art, music, and movement. I got to witness a variety of types of art activities to include sensory, tactile, and process art – each designed for different age groups. I also learned that as a teacher I have to focus on the process of learning through art, music, and movement - not on the finished product. Integrating art with other content areas as well learning how to adapt activities for different children’s individual needs was another area I learned about. Taking this course helped me to understand the benefits of art, music, and movement for children and also how to provide appropriate learning experiences for children.
