CHD 118 Language Arts for Young Children
From this course I have realized the importance of improving children’s language and literacy skills at an early age. My artifact from this course was two props I created to go with my lesson plan. One prop was a puppet to aide with my listening and speaking lesson plan and the other was magnetic characters from a book with my reading and writing lesson plan. Both props could be used within a group of children or individually. The props were also used to help children were English was not their first language. From creating this artifact, I have learned various techniques and strategies to teach and support early literacy skills. I also learned how children in different age groups learn and develop with their language skills. From this knowledge I can apply now apply it when teaching children in my own classroom. It was really fun creating the props for a story because I got to think about the goals and objectives for the prop, be creative, and think about how the children might react. When introducing young children to language arts you have to keep them interested and engaged and props are good way to support this. This course created good practice in creating materials and planning an environment that promotes literacy, speaking, listening, reading, and writing development.
